Tumbleweed Houses, Tiny is Better!

The main reasons why we are contributing to global warming is our overconsumption. We want the most clothes, the biggest cars and the biggest houses. With larger homes, we have more space to put more stuff, so we buy more and more and fill our homes with useless possessions. Jay Shafer found the perfect way to avoid getting stuck in the never-ending over-consumption vicious circle: own a smaller house!

For 10 years now, he has been building Tumbleweed homes for as little as 18 000$ US. Imagine the savings you make from buying such a home. Not only are you saving on the home itself but you get less space to fill up with things and consequently buy less junk.

There are two different categories of tumbleweed homes: Tiny houses ranging from 65square feet to 140 square feet and small houses from 250 square feet to 840 square feet. They can include from one to three bedrooms depending on the model. An ingenious plumbing system allows the houses to be connected to public water and sewer. They also offer the option of including a standard, compost or RV-type toilet. What about electricity? You just plug your house outside or even to a solar electric system with an inverter and voila, you got power!

You can buy the house plans to build your own tumbleweed home or you can buy a pre-built house that will be delivered to you and ready to be lived-in. An estimate of 500 to 800 hours is needed to complete a tiny house. Another advantage is that you don’t necessarily need to own land since you can move your tumbleweed home. You can rent a space in a backyard or on someone's land. Isn’t that just a great way to travel and see the world? You don’t even need to leave your home to do so!
